This Miso Butter Salmon recipe offers a delightful balance of sweet and savory flavors with a rich, buttery miso topping. The salmon is tender and flaky with a slightly charred, caramelized crust achieved by baking and a quick broil or air frying. Perfect for a flavorful, easy-to-make meal served with steamed rice and vegetables.

Ingredients

Salmon

  • 4 Salmon fillets, 6 oz each

Miso Butter

  • 6 tbsp Unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 tbsp White miso paste
  • 1 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 2 tsp Fresh ginger, grated
  • 1-2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Green onions, sliced thin

Garnish (optional)

  • Additional green onions, sliced thin
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Make Miso Butter: In a medium bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter, white miso paste, brown sugar, freshly grated ginger, minced garlic, and thinly sliced green onions. Use a spatula to thoroughly mash and mix all the ingredients together until well incorporated into a smooth miso butter.
  2. Prepare Salmon with Miso Butter: Divide the prepared miso butter evenly over the tops of the salmon fillets. Using a butter knife or offset spatula, spread the butter mixture evenly across the entire surface of each fillet, ensuring full coverage for maximum flavor.
  3. Cooking in Oven (Option 1): Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the salmon fillets in a large skillet or baking dish. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the salmon turns opaque and is nearly cooked through. Then, switch the oven to broil on high and broil the salmon for 1 to 2 minutes until the top caramelizes and gets a slight char.
  4. Cooking in Air Fryer (Option 2): Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (205°C). Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup. Place the salmon fillets inside the basket without overlapping and cook for 9 to 10 minutes. Do not flip the fillets during cooking; they will cook evenly as is.
  5. Serve: Once cooked, transfer the salmon fillets to a serving platter. Drizzle any remaining miso butter over the top for added richness. Garnish with extra sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately with steamed rice and vegetables for a complete meal.

Notes

  • You can choose to cook the salmon either in the oven or air fryer based on your convenience.
  • Make sure the butter is softened to make mixing easier and to spread evenly on the salmon.
  • Do not overcook the salmon to retain its flaky and tender texture.
  • Using fresh ginger and garlic enhances the savory flavor in the miso butter.
  • For a gluten-free version, ensure the miso paste is gluten-free certified.
  • Leftover miso butter can be refrigerated and used as a flavorful spread for other dishes.
