These Italian Chicken Burgers bring the delicious flavors of chicken parmesan into a juicy, flavorful patty smothered in marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. Perfect for a quick and easy weeknight meal, these burgers combine seasoned ground chicken with Italian herbs and cheese, cooked on the stovetop and finished with toasty buns and fresh basil.

Ingredients

Chicken Patties

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (panko with Italian seasoning recommended)
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil

Toppings and Assembly

  • 2 cups marinara sauce (divided)
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese (or grated mozzarella)
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a medium bowl, combine ground chicken, Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup marinara sauce, chopped onion, minced garlic, and fresh parsley. Season the mixture with salt and pepper. Mix well using a large spoon or your hands until evenly incorporated. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
  2. Cook the Burgers: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook until golden brown on one side, about 4 to 5 minutes. Alternatively, you can grill the burgers for 4 minutes per side.
  3. Add Sauce and Cheese: Flip the patties and immediately pour the remaining marinara sauce around them in the skillet. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, adjusting the heat as needed to prevent it from bubbling aggressively. Top each patty with a slice of mozzarella cheese. Cover the skillet and cook for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese melts and the chicken is cooked through.
  4. Toast the Buns: While the burgers finish cooking, place buttered hamburger buns in a 350°F oven. Toast them until warmed through and lightly crispy, about 5 minutes.
  5. Assemble the Burgers: Spoon extra marinara sauce from the skillet onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Place each chicken patty on top of the sauce, garnish with fresh basil if desired, and top with the remaining bun halves. Serve immediately and enjoy!

  • For a gluten-free option, use certified gluten-free panko breadcrumbs and hamburger buns.
  • To make it lighter, use light mozzarella cheese or omit the cheese entirely. Serve the patties without buns alongside a salad or roasted vegetables.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute mozzarella cheese with a dairy-free cheese alternative.
