This healthy and easy chia seed jam recipe uses fresh berries, chia seeds, and a natural sweetener to create a delicious, nutrient-packed spread. Ready in just about 20 minutes, this no-added-pectin jam is perfect for toast, yogurt, or desserts and stores well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Ingredients

Jam Ingredients

  • 3 cups fresh berries of choice (e.g., strawberries, blueberries, blackberries)
  • ¼ cup filtered water
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or alternative sweetener like agave or coconut sugar)
  • 2-3 tablespoons chia seeds
  • Juice of ½ lemon

Instructions

  1. Simmer the Berries: Add the fresh berries, filtered water, and maple syrup to a nonstick saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally and mashing some berries with the spoon to release their juices.
  2. Add Chia Seeds: Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in the chia seeds thoroughly until well incorporated. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes to allow the chia seeds to absorb liquid and thicken the jam.
  3. Finish with Lemon Juice: Stir in the juice of ½ lemon to brighten the flavor. Transfer the jam to a clean glass jar.
  4. Store and Use: Use the jam immediately or refrigerate it. It will thicken more as it cools and can be stored in the refrigerator for 7-14 days.

Notes

  • The recipe works well with a mix of berries but you can use any single type or frozen berries (add extra simmering time if using frozen).
  • This jam recipe has not been tested with fruits other than berries, which have high water content vital for this method.
  • Maple syrup can be swapped with agave, coconut sugar, or another sweetener; adjust quantity to taste.
  • For thicker jam, use 3 tablespoons of chia seeds, but 2 tablespoons is recommended as the jam naturally thickens upon cooling.
