This Easy Apple Crisp recipe features tender, cinnamon-spiced Granny Smith apples topped with a buttery, oat-filled crumb topping. Perfectly baked to golden perfection, this classic dessert is simple to prepare and offers a comforting balance of sweet and tart flavors, ideal for any season.

Ingredients

Crisp Topping

  • 1/2 cup (65g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (90g) old fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup (168g) brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into cubes)

Apple Filling

  • 5 cups (595g) thinly sliced Granny Smith apples (from about 4 large peeled and cored apples)
  • 1/4 cup (56g) brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 tbsp (16g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it reaches the perfect baking temperature by the time you’re ready to cook.
  2. Prepare the Crisp Topping Dry Mix: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices and sugar.
  3. Incorporate Butter into Topping: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter or fork, cut the butter into the mixture until it forms crumbly clusters that come together. Set this topping mixture aside.
  4. Mix the Apple Filling: In a separate bowl, combine the sliced Granny Smith apples with brown sugar, melted butter, flour, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir gently to coat the apples completely and evenly.
  5. Assemble the Crisp: Transfer the apple mixture into an 8 or 9-inch square baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the prepared crisp topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake the Apple Crisp: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown around the edges and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the dish from the oven and allow the apple crisp to cool for about 15 minutes before serving, so the filling sets slightly and it is safe to eat.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for the best balance of tartness and firmness.
  • Cold butter is essential for creating a crumbly topping texture.
  • Let the crisp cool slightly to allow juices to thicken for optimal serving consistency.
  • This dessert pairs wonderfully with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
