This Crockpot French Onion Chicken is a comforting and easy-to-make meal featuring tender chicken breasts slow-cooked in a rich blend of French onion soup and Lipton onion soup mix, topped with melted Gruyere or Swiss cheese. It combines the classic flavors of French onion soup with juicy chicken, finished under the broiler for a beautifully melted cheese topping.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs

Onion and Soup Base

  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can condensed French onion soup
  • 1 (1 oz) packet Lipton Onion Soup Mix

Topping

  • 4-6 thick slices Gruyere or Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crockpot: Spray a large crockpot with non-stick spray to prevent sticking. Arrange the chicken breasts evenly at the bottom of the crockpot.
  2. Add Onions and Seasoning: Layer the thinly sliced yellow onions over the chicken. Sprinkle the Lipton Onion Soup & Dip Mix evenly on top, then pour the can of condensed French onion soup over everything. Place the lid securely on the crockpot.
  3. Cook the Chicken: Cook on high for 2 to 3 hours or on low for 6 to 7 hours, until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
  4. Preheat the Broiler: Once the chicken is done, preheat the oven broiler. Grease a casserole dish with non-stick spray.
  5. Assemble for Broiling: Carefully remove the cooked chicken breasts and place them in the greased casserole dish. Scoop out and place the cooked onions on top of the chicken. Pour about 1/3 cup of the cooking broth over the chicken and onions to keep it moist.
  6. Add Cheese and Broil: Top each chicken breast with thick slices of Gruyere or Swiss cheese. Broil in the oven for approximately 2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve immediately while warm and cheesy.

Notes

  • Use chicken thighs for a juicier, more flavorful option if preferred.
  • Gruyere cheese adds a nutty flavor, but Swiss cheese is a great substitute.
  • If you don’t have a broiler, you can melt the cheese in a hot oven at 400°F for 5-7 minutes.
  • Make sure not to overcook the chicken in the crockpot to keep it tender and juicy.
  • Leftover broth can be spooned over the chicken when serving for extra moisture and flavor.
