Chipotle Crema is a creamy, tangy, and smoky sauce made by blending sour cream, mayonnaise, chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, lime, garlic, and spices. Perfect for adding a zesty kick to tacos, grilled meats, and roasted vegetables, this versatile crema can be easily customized for heat and dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • ¾ cup sour cream (regular or fat-free)
  • 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise (regular or fat-free)

Chipotle & Seasonings

  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
  • 3 Tablespoons adobo sauce
  • 1 lime (zested and juiced)
  • 1 clove garlic (peeled)
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin (optional)
  • Salt (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Place the sour cream, mayonnaise, chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, lime zest and juice, garlic, and cumin (if using) into a blender or food processor.
  2. Blend Until Smooth: Blend the mixture until it forms a smooth and creamy sauce with even texture.
  3. Season to Taste: Taste the crema and add salt as needed, blending briefly to incorporate.
  4. Transfer & Store: Pour the crema into a jar or squeeze bottle. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

  • The crema stores well in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • The sauce will thicken as it chills; if too thick, thin with a little lime juice or water before serving.
  • If chipotle peppers in adobo aren’t available, substitute with chipotle powder or smoked paprika plus a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • To make a vegan version, swap sour cream and mayonnaise with plant-based alternatives.
  • Add extra heat by blending in more chipotle peppers or cayenne pepper.
  • For a lighter version, replace mayonnaise or sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.
