This Baked BBQ Shredded Tofu recipe offers a delicious, plant-based alternative to traditional BBQ shredded meats. Using super firm tofu shredded like farm-style cheese, it’s seasoned with bold spices and baked to create sweet, smoky, and chewy tofu shreds perfect for tacos, quesadillas, or sandwiches. The method ensures a flavorful, crisp yet tender texture that holds up well with your favorite BBQ sauce.

Ingredients

Tofu and Seasonings

  • 16 ounce block super firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil (or other neutral cooking oil)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt to taste (optional)

BBQ Sauce

  • 1/3 cup sweet BBQ sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Shred Tofu: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Using the large holes on a cheese grater, shred the tofu along the short edge, pulling downwards from the top to create long, farm-style shreds.
  2. Season the Tofu: In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded tofu with 1 tablespoon canola oil, soy sauce, chili powder, smoked paprika, paprika, and a pinch of salt if desired. Toss well to evenly coat the tofu with the spices and oil.
  3. Spread and Bake: Line a half sheet pan with parchment paper (or lightly oil if not using parchment). Spread the tofu in a thin, even layer; it’s fine if some shreds overlap. Place on the middle rack of the preheated oven.
  4. Initial Bake: Bake the tofu at 375°F for 12 to 15 minutes until it turns golden and starts to crisp around the edges.
  5. Add BBQ Sauce: Remove the tofu from the oven and use a spatula to toss the shreds gently with the sweet BBQ sauce until fully coated.
  6. Final Bake: Return the tofu to the oven for an additional 6 to 8 minutes, baking until the tofu becomes firm, sticky, and develops a chewy texture with rich BBQ flavor.
  7. Serve: Serve the baked BBQ shredded tofu warm in tacos, quesadillas, or sandwiches for a tasty plant-based meal. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use super firm tofu as extra firm can be crumbly even after pressing.
  • Any sweet BBQ sauce works well; Trader Joe’s or homemade vegan BBQ sauce are great options.
  • The shredded baked tofu works even without BBQ sauce; simply add your preferred seasonings along with salt and bake until firm and golden.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated and consume within 3-4 days. Reheat in a skillet for best texture.
  • If doubling, use a full sheet pan instead of a half sheet pan to avoid overcrowding.
  • Recipe updated April 2025 to include soy sauce for enhanced flavor and adjust seasoning timing.
