Salisbury steak is a comforting, hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties cooked in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. It’s a classic American meal perfect for a cozy dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 oz sliced mushrooms
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • Optional: Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, garlic, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into oval patties.
  3. Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties until browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove patties and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and cook until tender.
  5. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir well to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  6. Slowly whisk in beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  7. Simmer until gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
  8. Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and cook for another 5-7 minutes until the patties are cooked through.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Add a splash of red wine to the gravy for richer flavor.
  • Use gluten-free flour and bread crumbs for gluten-free versions or skip bread crumbs for lower-carb.
  • Mushrooms can be replaced with caramelized onions or a mix of both.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat gently with a splash of beef broth to keep gravy smooth.
