Homemade donuts that are soft, fluffy, and customizable with various toppings and fillings.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk along with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the remaining sugar, butter, salt, and eggs. Add the yeast mixture once it’s ready.
  3. Gradually add in the flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing well until the dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Using a donut cutter, cut out the donut shapes and place them on a floured surface.
  8. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Fry the donuts in small batches, turning them when golden brown, for about 2 minutes on each side.
  10. Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  11. Once cooled slightly, you can dip them in glaze or powdered sugar, or serve them plain.

Notes

  • For a glaze, mix powdered sugar with a little milk and vanilla extract.
  • For filled donuts, use a piping bag to inject jam, cream, or chocolate into the fried donuts.
  • For cinnamon sugar donuts, toss the fried donuts in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.
  • To store leftovers, keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze them for up to 3 months.
