Perfect for those who crave a flavorful, spicy-sweet fried chicken sandwich experience.

Ingredients

Chicken and Coating

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (each sliced into 2 pieces)
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce (Frank’s Red Hot preferred)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Slap Yo Momma seasoning
  • 1/2 tablespoon seasoning salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying (about two inches deep)

Hot Honey Sauce

  • 1/2 cup Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon Slap Yo Momma seasoning

Instructions

  1. Marinate Chicken: Slice the chicken breasts into two pieces each and place them in a bowl with buttermilk and hot sauce. Let it marinate for 30 minutes to tenderize and infuse flavor.
  2. Prepare Coating Bowls: In one bowl, beat the eggs. In a second bowl, mix together the flour, panko bread crumbs, Slap Yo Momma seasoning, seasoning salt, paprika, garlic powder, baking powder, and pepper.
  3. Coat Chicken: For each chicken piece, first coat it thoroughly in the flour mixture, then dip into the beaten eggs, and coat again in the flour mixture. Shake off excess coating and place the pieces on a baking sheet. Repeat for all pieces.
  4. Heat Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a large deep pan about two inches deep and heat it over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry Chicken: Fry the coated chicken pieces in small batches for 5 to 7 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. Make Hot Honey Sauce: Preheat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Once melted, add Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, honey, lemon juice, and Slap Yo Momma seasoning. Stir continuously and let the mixture simmer for 2 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Toss Chicken in Sauce: Either toss the fried chicken directly in the hot honey sauce to coat or transfer the sauce to a bowl and brush or drizzle it over the chicken.
  8. Assemble Sandwich: Place the hot honey coated chicken on your favorite sandwich bread or buns, add desired toppings like lettuce, pickles, or mayo, and serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure oil temperature stays around 350°F for crispy, evenly fried chicken without being greasy.
  • Double coating with flour and egg mixture makes the crust extra crunchy.
  • Adjust hot sauce amount in marinade and sauce to control spice level.
  • Use fresh lemon juice for bright flavor in the hot honey sauce.
  • For a healthier option, this recipe can be adapted for air frying, though texture will differ slightly.
  • Let fried chicken rest on a wire rack instead of paper towels for crispier results.
