This Coffee Buttercream Frosting recipe delivers a rich, creamy, and intensely flavored frosting perfect for cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. Made with buttery smoothness and infused with the boldness of instant coffee, this frosting strikes a perfect balance of sweetness and coffee richness, ideal for coffee lovers wanting to elevate their baked treats.

Ingredients

Buttercream Base

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature (see notes for using salted butter)
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅛ tsp salt (omit if using salted butter)
  • 2 tbsp milk or heavy whipping cream, up to ¼ cup if desired

Coffee Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee or espresso powder
  • 1 tablespoon boiling water

Instructions

  1. Prepare Coffee Mixture: In a small bowl, dissolve the instant coffee or espresso powder in boiling water until fully combined to create a concentrated coffee base for the frosting.
  2. Cream Butter: Using a stand mixer or a large bowl with a handheld mixer, beat the room temperature unsalted butter for 3-5 minutes on medium speed until the butter becomes very light, fluffy, and pale yellow in color.
  3. Add Powdered Sugar: Stop the mixer and add 3-4 cups powdered sugar gradually. Beat on low speed for 30-60 seconds until the sugar and butter start to incorporate and the mixture becomes crumbly.
  4. Beat Until Fluffy: Increase mixer speed to medium or medium-high and continue beating for 3-4 minutes until the frosting is light, smooth, and fluffy.
  5. Incorporate Coffee Mixture and Salt: Add the coffee mixture and salt (if using unsalted butter) to the creamed butter and sugar. Mix until everything is thoroughly combined and uniform in color.
  6. Adjust Consistency: Slowly add milk or heavy whipping cream, one tablespoon at a time, mixing after each addition until the desired frosting consistency is reached.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Use immediately to frost your favorite cakes, cupcakes, or desserts. Store leftover frosting tightly covered in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • You can substitute salted butter; omit the added salt in the recipe if you do.
  • Adjust the amount of powdered sugar between 3 to 4 cups depending on your preferred sweetness and thickness.
  • Milk or heavy whipping cream can be adjusted from 2 tablespoons up to ¼ cup depending on desired frosting consistency.
  • For a stronger coffee flavor, increase the instant coffee powder slightly but be cautious as it can make the frosting bitter.
  • Allow the frosting to come to room temperature before spreading if refrigerated.
