Cheesy onion rings are a crispy, golden fried snack featuring onion rings stuffed with melty cheddar cheese for an indulgent and flavorful twist on the classic.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, sliced into rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup bread crumbs (panko or regular)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Separate the onion slices into individual rings and set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and milk.
  4. Dip each onion ring first into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture.
  5. Place a small amount of shredded cheddar cheese inside the ring, then carefully coat with bread crumbs to seal the cheese inside.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Fry the coated onion rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  8. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  9. Serve warm for the best melty cheese experience.

Notes

  • Use fresh onions for the best texture; frozen can be used if thawed and dried.
  • Cheddar cheese melts well, but mozzarella or pepper jack are good alternatives.
  • For a healthier option, bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 2 days.
  • Reheat in oven or air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes to maintain crispiness.
  • Microwaving is not recommended as it makes the coating soggy.
