These Black Bean Chips are a delicious and nutritious gluten-free snack made from homemade black bean flour, avocado oil, and sea salt. They are baked to crispy perfection and are perfect for dipping or enjoying on their own. This simple recipe uses just a few ingredients and is easily customizable with spices for extra flavor.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • ½ cup black bean flour (made by grinding dry black beans)
  • ½-1 teaspoon sea salt to taste

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil (or other cooking oil, avoid olive oil; see notes for oil-free option)
  • ½-2/3 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare black bean flour (if needed): If you don’t have black bean flour, grind ½ cup of dry black beans in a high-powered blender like a Vitamix for 15-20 seconds until a flour-like consistency forms.
  3. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine the black bean flour and sea salt evenly.
  4. Add oil and mix: Add 1 tablespoon avocado oil to the dry mixture and mix thoroughly using a fork, ensuring the oil is well incorporated.
  5. Add water gradually: Slowly pour in ½ cup water, stirring to combine. Add more water as needed (up to 2/3 cup) to achieve a slightly runny batter consistency.
  6. Portion the batter: Drop teaspoons of the batter onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them well apart. The batter will spread slightly.
  7. Shape the chips: Using a fork, gently press and stretch each drop of batter to form thin, flat chips for maximum crispiness. Avoid creating holes.
  8. Bake first side: Bake the chips in the oven for 10 minutes, allowing them to set and start crisping.
  9. Flip and bake second side: Using a large fork, carefully slide under each chip to flip them without tearing. Bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
  10. Cool chips: Remove the chips from the oven and let them cool completely on the baking sheet to achieve full crispness.
  11. Serve: Enjoy the black bean chips immediately, ideally paired with guacamole or your favorite dip.

Notes

  • Black bean flour may have some visible black specs from the bean skins, which is normal and adds texture.
  • Chips do not need to be uniform in size or shape. Ensure they are thin and have no holes to prevent breaking during flipping.
  • Use a large fork to flip chips by sliding under instead of lifting to avoid breaking and to create ripples.
  • For oil-free chips, omit the oil and carefully flip to avoid sticking; you may need to gently scrape under the chips.
  • Add spices like garlic powder, cumin, cayenne, or paprika to dry ingredients for flavored chips.
  • Chips taste best the same day; store in a single layer to keep them crisp and prevent sogginess.
