Ingredients

For the Vegan Hot Chocolate Mix

  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup + 2 tablespoons coconut sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt or pink Himalayan salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

For Making the Vegan Hot Chocolate

  • 1 cup almond milk or coconut milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons vegan hot chocolate mix

Optional Add-ins

  • 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter or cashew butter
  • 1 tablespoon vegan protein powder (unflavored)
  • ½ teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Chilli powder or cayenne powder (for a spicy kick)
  • ½ cup strong coffee
  • 12 shots espresso or 1 tablespoon espresso powder

Instructions

  1. Make the Vegan Hot Chocolate Mix: Add the cocoa powder, coconut sugar, kosher salt, and ground cinnamon into a high-speed blender and blend on high for 10 seconds until well combined. Alternatively, you can mix the ingredients in a bowl and sift them for a smooth blend. Transfer the mix to a glass jar or airtight container and store it in the pantry for up to 2 months.
  2. Heat the Milk and Vanilla: Pour the almond or coconut milk and vanilla extract into a small pot and warm it on the stovetop over medium-high heat until hot but not boiling.
  3. Mix the Hot Chocolate: Once the milk is hot, whisk in 3 tablespoons of the vegan hot chocolate mix until smooth and creamy.
  4. Customize and Serve: Pour the hot chocolate into mugs, optionally stirring in add-ins like peanut butter, protein powder, peppermint extract, spices, or coffee/espresso to your taste. Top with vegan mini marshmallows or your favorite toppings for a comforting treat.

Notes

  • Use unsweetened cocoa powder to control the sweetness of your hot chocolate.
  • Higher fat plant-based milks like almond or coconut milk yield a creamier hot chocolate.
  • Whisk the hot cocoa mix into warm milk for a smooth, creamy texture.
  • Add the mix only after heating the milk to ensure proper blending.
  • The dry mix stores well in an airtight container in the pantry for up to 2 months.
